Hey, All!

Thank you for registering for the first annual Brown Dirt Relay! We are so excited to showcase the wonderful trail systems that are available out here in Eagle Mountain! In the letter following, there are specifics relating to the course, as well as things that you, and your team need to be aware of, by way of supplies, etc...

Race Specifics

When: August 27th @7 am (all participants need to arrive between 6:15-6:30). Those who will be running later in the day will appreciate your promptness, as the closest we are able to start to 7:00, the less heat they will be running in...

Where:The relay begins and ends near Hidden Hollow Elementary (7447 North Hidden Valley Parkway • Eagle Mountain, Utah)

Cost: $100 for a 4 person team (If registered by Aug 20) Late registration is $120. Register at active.com, or by going to browndirtrelay.blogspot.com, and following the link.

Proceeds go to The Cupcake Charity, which helps families in need in the EM and Saratoga Springs area.

The Course
There will be 4 esparate courses. Each will be marked and color coded with the following coordinating paint, cones, and stakes:

Leg 1: Orange, Leg 2: Blue, Leg 3: Yellow, Leg 4: Green

Leg one is approximately 5 miles, and will begin and end at Hidden Hollow elementary. There is one hill in this, that may present a challenge...but we do like a good challenge, don't we?!!...

Leg 2 is approximately 4 miles, and will begin at the school, and end on Lake Mountain Road. The #3 runner will need to drive to meet their 2nd runner at the exchange point (directions will be given).

Leg 3 is approximately 6 miles, and will begin on Lake Mountain Road, and end at the school. #2 runner will drive back to the school.

Leg 4 is approximately 7 miles, and will begin and end at the school.

Each leg will be run on an all dirt trail. Each has it's own level of difficulty, but are pretty well comparable.

**All team members must be present at the finish to cross as a team**

Water, Aid Stations and Bathrooms

There will be one aid station on the course, as well as one at the exchange between legs 2 and 3. Runners are encouraged to bring their own water, by way of a water pack, bottle, etc. There are sections of the course, particularly in the roads closest to the school, where teammates can drive in order to provide food, water, and/or other support.
Teams will be responsible for their own water, snacks and other items they feel is necessary during the time of the relay. These items can be kept in a team cooler, at their team's “headquarters,”...*which will be discussed later in the letter...*
**There will be a paramedic on site, who will provide aide when necessary.
**There will also be massages offered to those who feel that need, as well.
**There will be one port-a-potty at the starting line.
Those who will be running it “Ultra Style” (two person team)

There are two ways that this can be done...You decide which way works best for your team.
First way: Alternating legs: Each person will run a total of 11 miles.
*Runner 1 will begin and end at the school
*Runner 2 will begin at school and end on Lake Mountain Road...at which time, runner 1 will drive to meet runner 2, to exchange for the 3rd leg.
*Runner 1 will begin leg 3 on Lake Mountain Road and end at the school...at which time, runner 2 will drive back to the school, to meet runner 1, and begin the 4th leg.
* Runner 2 will begin the 4th leg and end at the school.
*Both runners will cross the finish line together.
Second way: Two legs back to back: Runner 1 will run 9 miles & runner 2 will do 13 miles
    • Runner 1 will begin at the school and end on Lake Mountain Road. Runner 2 will drive to exchange at Lake Mountain Road.
    • Runner 2 will begin at Lake Mountain Road, and end at the school. Runner 1 will drive back to meet runner one at the finish.
    • Both runners will finish together.

Team Specifics:
Each team will be assigned a spot, AKA “Home Base.” Each team will need:
  1. A tent or some other shade cover
  2. A cooler filled with necessities such as water, Gatorade, chocolate milk, etc.
  3. Other food items and necessities such as sun screen wipes, etc.
  4. A car to shuttle team mates.
  5. You may also want to bring money (cash preferred...credit cards not accepted) , as some concessions and other vendors may be there.

We will not be having pin on number's. We have decided to do it “Iron Man” style, and use a good old Sharpie. Each team will have the same number written on their arm, so that we can differentiate teams, and let those know when their teammate is nearing the exchange zone.

Dressing up and other decorations:
Some teams like to dress up, or have coordinating uniforms, as well as decorate their “home base”. This is a fun thing to do, and we certainly want teams to enjoy themselves. Although this is in no way a requirement, there may be a prize for the most decorated team....

**Finally, please be courteous, and clean up your mess. It may be a good idea to bring garbage sacks, so that you can easily dispose of your mess.**

Prizes and Sponsorship Info:
We started a little late in the game, as far as getting sponsors, etc., but we were extremely lucky to be able to gain a few sponsors. The following Sponsors are:

Fleet Feet of American Fork
Anytime Fitness of Saratoga Springs
Sarah Lee Bakery of American Fork

Thanks to these wonderful sponsors, we will be able to have prizes for each winning category, as well as bread at the finish line! Be sure and stop by these places, as a token of gratitude for their generosity.

Thanks, again for your support of Brown Dirt Relay.
